URDE Fine Art Auction Presents Alexander Calder Paper Cut-Out, Charlie Brown Publicity Cels

The son of an established artistic family, Alexander Calder spent his childhood tinkering with wire, cloth, and other materials. He later dabbled in mechanical engineering before turning to art full-time. This background influenced the geometric, delicately balanced mobiles and paper sculptures that became Calder’s signature. Leading the upcoming Fine Art & Photography sale from URDE Fine Art Auction is an original drawing on cut-out paper by Alexander Calder. This untitled piece from 1966 was executed with crayon and pencil. It portrays a fantastical creature with the body of a giraffe, the high-heeled feet of a person, and an American flag in place of a head. 

This timed sale includes a broad selection of photographs and prints from notable artists such as Peter Max, Russell Young, and Ansel Adams. Among the top lots is a hand-signed color model/ publicity cels by Charles Schulz depicting the beloved characters of Charlie Brown and Lucy. In these cels, Lucy plays her classic trick on Charlie Brown, pulling a football away just before he can kick it. Bidders can also consider a 1978 etching and aquatint from Helen Frankenthaler, a 2002 etching by Damien Hirst, and assorted wildlife photography by David Yarrow.
