Turner Auctions + Appraisals Will Bring Eclectic Range of Counterculture Posters to Auction
Feb 12, 2022 13:30 ESTTurner Auctions + Appraisals’ upcoming sale will offer several notable hippie, music, and counterculture posters. One of the featured lots is a poster for a movie titled Barfly. The 1987 film depicts the struggles of poet and alcoholic Henry Chinaski. He falls in love with a young woman and finds success, which lasts only for a short period. It is based on an original screenplay by Charles Bukowski, the noted German-American poet. According to Roger Ebert, the director Barbet Schroeder was committed to filming the screenplay exactly as written, in all its rambling but romantic detail. The available black and white poster shows Charles Bukowski seated in between the two lead characters. It also comes with a two-page conversation with Bukowski.
An array of Rick Griffin posters are also available in the auction. Griffin was one of the leading American designers of psychedelic posters. Active in the 1960s, he was also a renowned contributor to the underground comix movement. One of his offered lots is a San Mezcalito poster. It depicts a man in Indigenous wear against a blue foliage background. Explore more counterculture posters and register to bid online on LiveAuctioneers.
