The David Hall T206 Collection Part IV Sports Collectibles Catalog Auction #50027

The fourth part of the David Hall T206 Sports Collectibles Catalog event, offered by Heritage Auctions, will offer more than 200 early baseball cards. The T206 is a designation for tobacco cards issued from 1909 to 1911. These cards were offered on cigarette cartons and loose tobacco packs through the sixteen brands of the American Tobacco Company. Featured in the sale is a Broad Leaf Mordecai Brown card that the auction house says is among the rarest of the T206 cards. The piece is considered “mid-grade with no major condition faults.” Mordecai Brown was a Hall of Fame inductee for the Chicago Cubs who pitched with only three fingers (his hand was injured in a childhood farming accident). The three fingers gave his pitches an unusual approach to the plate, which may account for part of his success.

Also featured is a Rube Marquard card, which is one of two confirmed examples of its kind. Marquard was a Hall of Fame pitcher who led the Giants and later the Dodgers to five National League pennants. This card stands out due to the Uzit Cigarettes ad on its reverse, which the auction house states is “almost never encountered.” Other players with early cards in the sale include Ty Cobb, Joe Tinker, Walter Johnson, Johnny Evers, Christy Mathewson, and others.
