The Collector: English & European 18th & 19th Century Furniture, Ceramics, Silver & Works of Art
Apr 28, 2020 10:00 EDT - May 07, 2020 12:00 EDTFrom 18th-century salons to 20th-century dinner tables, the candelabrum has witnessed a revival with every passing age. An American silver, copper, and antler eight-light candelabrum is a highlight of Christie’s upcoming English & European 18th & 19th Century Furniture, Ceramics, Silver & Works of Art auction. The piece has an oval form with an undulating rim bordered in silver and terminating in leafy scrolls. Animal heads are applied to either side of the copper body; both are surrounded with boughs of pine.
Another lot of interest is an 1880s Roman micromosaic table by Cesare Roccheggiani. The circular black marble top with a central roundel shows Romulus, Remus, and the she-wolf in an Italian landscape, surrounded by eight Roman scenes. Another available item is an Austrian silver tea service and tray, designed by Josef Hoffmann. The set includes a teapot, creamer, sugar bowl, and cover. Each item is designed with wooden loop handles, a fluted drum form, and spot-hammered surfaces. To view the complete catalog and register to bid online, visit Christie’s.
