Tejo Remy’s Rag Chairs and LaVerne Cabinet Among Lots in Hindman’s Modern Design Auction

The father and son duo Philip (1907 – 1987) and Kelvin LaVerne (b. 1937) are responsible for furniture that united functionality with art. After studying art history, metal sculpting, and furniture design, Kelvin joined his father Philip to open a studio in New York City. They started experimenting with metal and treating pieces with special soil. It took them more than five years to perfect the process. A ‘Chan’ cabinet from the LaVerne collection will be featured in the upcoming Modern Design auction at Hindman. The cabinet is etched, patinated, and polychromed bronze and pewter with a raised signature in metalwork. The patterns on the doors were influenced by Chinese culture. The first section of the auction features a selection of works from French luminaries Pierre Chapo and Guillerme et Chambron, as well as Scandinavian flat weave carpets and standout pieces by designers Piero Fornasetti, Paul Evans, and two custom commissions by Gene Summers. 

Among pottery and clay works, an array of notable lots by Don Reitz, Jun Kaneko, Claude Conover, Peter Voulkos, Karen Karnes, Emmanuel Cooper, Colin Pearson, and others will be on offer. Contemporary designs by visionaries Tejo Remy and Niel van Eijik for Droog will be in direct dialogue with experimental seating by John Chamberlain and Dan Johnson. Remy’s pair of ‘Rag’ chairs is among the key lots. Decades after he first created a Rag chair, Remy remains in high demand.
