Significant Photography Works by Andreas Gursky and Cindy Sherman Come to Sale with Christie’s

Acclaimed photographer Andreas Gursky is a professor at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Germany, regarded as a highly radical academy in the art world. Known for his panoramic perspective, he often depicts dramatic views of sports events, especially football matches, in his images. The upcoming auction from Christie’s will feature Gursky’s Dortmund, one such work signed, titled, dated, and numbered in ink. The chromogenic print is mounted on Plexiglas and measures 121 by 88 inches with its frame. It is numbered two from an edition of four. William Eggleston’s Greenwood, Mississippi ‘The Red Ceiling’ (1973) is another noteworthy photograph in the sale. It was created with the dye transfer print process. The image is considered a significant and powerful work by Eggleston. Particularly striking is the way he captures the blood red hued wall and ceiling surface of the room. The American photographer is celebrated for popularizing color photography as an authentic art medium.

A work titled Untitled Film Still #81 (1980) by Cindy Sherman also leads the listing. The gelatin silver print, flush-mounted on board is numbered three from an edition of three. It is part of her path-breaking series of 70 black-and-white self-portraits in varied contexts.
