Sheafer + King Modern Offers Martin Friedman Painting, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Furniture, and Other Rarities

An oil on canvas painting titled Cascades by Hungarian-American abstract artist Martin Friedman is among the top lots of Sheafer + King Modern’s upcoming Modern + Contemporary Art and Design auction. In this abstract work, colored objects are layered over a tranquil landscape with a faint pink figure at the forefront. The painting is framed in black wood and signed “Martin Friedman.” The artist was best known for his paintings of abstract landscapes and illustrations. Imaginary landscapes by Friedman possess a soft edge that gives them an illusion of floating in mist. However, Friedman’s paintings are vibrantly colored and always highlight the sky as a dominant feature. Another key fine art lot in the catalog is a 1980 casein painting by American artist Gerald G. Boyce. Titled Monet with Pattern, the offered abstract piece depicts Claude Monet with his portrait contained within faint text, rectangular shapes, and a miniature mountain scene featuring a figure. The painting is signed and dated at the bottom right, presented in a wooden frame and double mat in cream and white. 

Several furniture lots will be on offer in this event, including a wooden side chair set designed by American-German designer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. These sleek chairs feature curved chrome legs and Corset-style backs, along with black leather seats. To the underside of some chairs are sticker tags that read “Made in Denmark” by Stendig. A mid-century modern stool by Warren Platner is also available. This design features circular steel rods welded to curved steel rods. Bidders can also consider R. A. Buys’ abstract mixed media work titled Faces in a Row and an acrylic sculpture by Norbert Witkowski.
