Rafael Osona Auctions Presents Robert Stark Jr. Painting, Document Signed by Washington and Knox

Rafael Osona Auctions will present its August 3, 2024, Americana Fine Art, Decorative Arts Auction, offering a wide-ranging catalog of Nantucket paintings, collectibles, and more. Leading the sale is an oil on canvas painting by Robert Stark Jr., a luminist who spent his career capturing the New England coast. Stark was particularly known for his Nantucket water scenes. The available painting, titled Nantucket Rainbow Fleet, depicts a scattering of sailboats on dark blue-black water. In the foreground is a small boat with a bright orange sail, while the background hints at the shoreline and several other colorful boats. Another notable Nantucket artist in the catalog is Emily Hoffmeier. Her Fishing Boats at Nantucket Harbor, 1936 painting is among the key lots. The artist used Impressionistic brushstrokes to depict a light-soaked harbor scene. Hoffmeier spent over 20 years summering in Nantucket, painting and running community art events. 

Beyond Nantucket artwork, this upcoming sale includes several historic Americana items and antique collectibles. A membership document signed by George Washington and Henry Knox is notable. This document for the Society of the Cincinnati dates back to 1784 and notes both men’s involvement in the American Revolutionary War. Bidders can also consider a Rolex Oyster Perpetual men’s wristwatch in stainless steel and 18-karat gold, a pair of John and William Cary Regency terrestrial and celestial globes.
