Rachel Davis Fine Arts Presents Work by Roger Mühl, Alice Schille, and Romare Bearden

Leading the upcoming sale of paintings, prints, and drawings from Rachel Davis Fine Arts is an oil on canvas painting by French artist Roger Mühl. Titled Jardin d’Iris (Iris Garden), this piece depicts a pastel tableau of flowers. A clump of purple irises marks the center of the composition, with pink, white, blue, and yellow blooms appearing to the sides. Mühl was fascinated by light and color in natural landscapes. He favored the South of France and frequently painted its coasts, gardens, and simple buildings. Also notable is a watercolor painting by Alice Schille, an American painter who worked in a Post-Impressionist vein throughout the 20th century. The available piece, titled Guatemalan Mother and Child, shows a crowd of colorful mothers and children. Shades of orange, pink, and green dominate the piece. 

A Romare Bearden silkscreen is another key lot in the upcoming sale. This 1979 print is signed and numbered in pencil. Titled Cattle of the Sun God, this work belongs to the artist’s Odysseus suite—a cycle of 20 collages linking Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey to Black American culture. The series explored themes of dislocation and home. The offered silkscreen employs bold colors and hard edges to show the stark contrast between land and sea.
