László Moholy-Nagy is known for his innovations in photography. Moholy-Nagy developed residual images by placing various objects on photo-sensitive paper and exposing them to light. The Hungarian artist’s works, associated with painting, printmaking, and design, capture his experiments with time, space, and light. The upcoming spring Photographs auction, offered by Sotheby’s, features a photogram by Moholy-Nagy titled Cover For The Magazine ‘Broom.’
Another highlight is Untitled Film Still #81 from Untitled Film Stills (1977–1980), an influential series of black-and-white self-portraits by photographer and filmmaker Cindy Sherman. Also among the key lots is an albumen print titled La Vague Brisée, Mer Méditeranée (The Breaking Wave) by Gustave Le Gray. Considered a leading French photographer of the 19th century, Le Gray developed many technical advancements in his craft. He also improved the paper negative by replacing it with wax paper. Also showcased are photographs by Ansel Adams and Pop artist Andy Warhol. Interested collectors can explore the full listings and register to bid online on Sotheby’s.
