Peter Vanderlaan & Mary Bliss Optical Sculpture and Henry Dasson Bronze Rotary Clock Come to Sale with Akiba AntiquesApr 05, 2022 12:00 EDT
Peter Vanderlaan and his wife Mary Beth Bliss share an exceptional partnership as they explore innovative optical designs in glass. Their glass sculpture series is a result of Bliss’ creative ideas combined with Vanderlaan’s understanding of the material. A 20th-century Lucite block from the series is a key highlight of the upcoming Hammer Time auction from Akiba Antiques. Made of lead crystals and borosilicates, the prismatic glass consists of many small pieces with etched and painted sides. Produced in limited volume, the optical sculpture reflects and refracts light with three main inner segments and ten outer facets.
A pair of earrings by Van Cleef & Arpels also leads the listings. Made in 18-karat yellow gold, the Alhambra earrings are designed with Mother of Pearl clover links. The Alhambra collection is named after a palace in Spain and inspired by the traditional quatrefoil. A notable bronze and hard stone clock by Henry Dasson features a blue spherical rotary movement and ringed numeral plates. Three bronze puttos stand on a four-footed base, holding a musical horn and a gilt bronze bird. The 19th-century cabinetmaker was renowned for his chiseling skills and bronze quality.
