Paintings by Trailblazing Indian Artists Highlight Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers Upcoming Sale
Jan 06, 2022 18:00 ESTGhulam Rasool Santosh was an avant-garde painter and poet born in India. After a spiritual experience in 1964, he took to a trailblazing painting style. Tantra (mysticism) and Kashmir Shaivism (a movement led by Lord Shiva’s followers) inspired his body of works. An interesting tantric abstract painting by Santosh is a key highlight of the upcoming auction by Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers. With a radiating red background signifying spiritual energy, the oil on board portrays a central motif of geometric lotus. The artist uses clean lines to illustrate the imagery of Tantric philosophy.
Works of other prominent Indian artists also lead the listings. One of them is a watercolor on paper by M.F. Husain. He often portrays horses as free-spirited creatures, drawing inspiration from the Cubist representation of animals. Often called the Picasso of India, Husain adapted Cubism in unique ways.
B. Prabha’s oil on canvas of a mother and child is representative of the lives of women and children living in rural areas. The figures in the painting are elongated and the deep red veil is the single dominant color. Prabha was a well-known name at a time when women artists in India were still unheard of.
