American painter James Rosenquist (1933 – 2017) was a 2001 inductee into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame. He is considered one of the proponents of the Pop Art movement. Works by Rosenquist often explore the role of advertising and consumer culture in art and society. Rosenquist utilized techniques he learned from making commercial art to depict popular cultural icons and mundane everyday objects. One of James Rosenquist’s untitled paintings is a key lot in this upcoming sale, the Collection of Jean and Jim Barrow from Brunk Auctions. The painting is a colorful image of flowers covering a disembodied human face, with eyes and teeth peeking through the flowers. This painting was completed in 1990 and is backed with wood paneling.
Beyond fine art, the sale will offer furniture, jewelry, decorative art, Asian art, wine, and more. A rare Pennsylvania federal, polychromed chest of drawers attributed to Mahantango Valley or Schwaben Creek is another key furniture lot. Made in 1830, the chest is dovetailed with cut nail construction and white pine throughout. Jack Lindsey, curator at the American Folk Art Museum, notes this chest is distinguished by the quality and pattern of its painted decoration, consisting of carefully rendered leaping stags, undulating flowering vines, birds, and stylized central tulips.
