Original Hal Foster Prince Valiant #1480 Sunday Comic Strip and Babe Ruth Signed Baseball Come to Sale With Nye & Co
Jun 12, 2024 10:00 EDTBorn in Canada, Harold Rudolf Foster (also known as Hal Foster) moved to the United States in 1921. He began his career as an illustration artist in Chicago. In 1937, Foster introduced his best known strip, Prince Valiant, a fiction based in the medieval period. Featuring more than 300 American newspapers, the weekly strip is known for its attention to detail. An original Sunday comic strip (#1480), dated June 20, 1965, is a key highlight of the upcoming sale by Nye & Co. The narration and dialogues are printed in captions rather than conventional word balloons. The artwork is personally inscribed by Hal Foster on the lower right panel. Another noteworthy collectible is a baseball signed by Babe Ruth. Manufactured by Reach (DC/LS/NTM), the official American League Ball (1942 – 45) has red stitching accents with a steel-tip fountain pen signature in black.
Good Fishing, an oil on board painting by Forrest King Moses, also leads the catalog. The landscape work exemplifies the influence of Japanese aesthetics on the artist. His compositions incorporated both abstraction and representational techniques in dynamic ways.
