Nazmiyal Auctions Offers Spanish Silk Brocade, Antique Rugs, and Vintage Carpets

A curated selection of antique, vintage, and modern rugs, many offered with no reserve, will soon be presented by Nazmiyal Auctions. Among the leading lots of the sale is a 16th-century Spanish silk brocade measuring approximately seven feet by six feet. The brocade is covered in richly rendered birds, flowers, and arabesques. Brocade is defined by the Antiquarian Society of the Art Institute of Chicago as “a collective name for a rich and heavy silk fabric with flowers, foliage, figures or other patterns, woven in colored silk with or without gold and silver thread.” It especially thrived in 15th to 17th-century Europe at the height of the Renaissance.
Also notable is a large Chinese Art Deco rug from circa 1920. During this era, weavers moved away from symmetry and traditional patterns in favor of controlled asymmetry and low-contrast colors. Simpler patterns also prevailed over busy allover designs in Art Deco rugs. The available example features branching trees, seaside structures, and hanging light fixtures that break down the boundary between the rug’s border and center.
