John James Audubon’s The Birds of America and The Quadrupeds of North America to Sell at Pook & Pook
May 08, 2023 09:00 EDTThe upcoming Decorative Arts sale at Pook and Pook, Inc. presents John James Audubon’s monumental book The Birds of America, published between 1840 and 1844. The seven-volume book contains bright illustrations of American bird species, including non-extinct birds. The French-American self-trained artist and naturalist is credited for identifying 25 new bird species. Audubon (1785 – 1851) developed a special technique for drawing birds. He used wires and pins to fix his dead bird models in lifelike poses. He often portrayed birds and wildlife in natural settings. A copy of The Quadrupeds of North America, another epic work by Audubon, is also available in the sale.
Collectors can find a wide array of silverware that includes a sterling silver flatware service from Reed & Barton. The large set contains dinner knives, salad forks, bouillon spoons, and teaspoons. It bears the brand’s Hepplewhite pattern. Bidders can also consider a sterling silver Paul Revere bowl, a flatware service set by J.E. Caldwell, and two Gorham sterling silver trays.
