Italian Sculpture and German 3D Collage Lead Alex Cooper Auctioneers’ Upcoming Sale

Milan-born sculptor Matteo Pugliese lived in Sardinia with his family for 12 years. During this period, he took to sculpture and drawing in a major way. Pugliese’s works are a combination of classic and modern styles. The sculptor’s Guardians series represents men from mostly Asian cultures geared with weapons to defend their land. Samurai Guardian V, a bronze and terracotta piece belonging to the series, is a key highlight at the upcoming sale from Alex Cooper Auctioneers. With a serious yet calm expression on his face, the warrior is armed and armored. The weapon, however, is a symbol of his inner defense rather than an expression of aggression. 

Leading the fine art listings is John Pierce Barnes’ unframed oil on canvas painting. While the artist explored varied styles, he is best remembered for his Impressionist portraits and landscapes. This vibrant portrait characterizes his mastery over Impressionism. Another noteworthy artwork in the sale is Ursula Schultze-Bluhm’s untitled three-dimensional collage in mixed media. The wall-mount sculpture features a painted frame adorned with bottle caps, doll parts, toy animals, beads, and labels.
