Gold Standard Auctions Offers a 1945 Walking Liberty Half Dollar, Foreign Coinage
Dec 31, 2024 11:00 ESTIn the upcoming Seattle Sage Coin Auction from Gold Standard Auctions, 450 lots of coins, currency, and foreign coinage will cross the auction block. Among the top lots in the catalog is a Walking Liberty half-dollar from 1945. The 50-cent coin commemorates the Allies’ victory over Germany and Japan at the end of World War II. Designed by sculptor and engraver Adolph A. Weinman and issued by the United States Mint between 1916 and 1947, the available piece is considered one of the best designs in US coinage history. The obverse of the coin depicts the image of Lady Liberty as she walks holding branches under the rising sun, carrying the American flag. The reverse shows a bald eagle soaring from a mountaintop. Another lot of interest in this sale is a $5 gold half-eagle from 1824. The 1824 $5 Gold Half Eagle was one of a series of coins struck from 1813 to 1829 that featured a capped bust design. The obverse features Liberty wearing a bonnet and looking left. The edge of the card has 13 stars and a date beneath. The reverse shows a spread-winged eagle and the words “E Pluribus Unum” on a ribbon over its head.
Bidders can also consider a 1970-S small date Lincoln Memorial cent from the Lincoln Cent series. The coin’s obverse, struck at the San Francisco Mint, has the phrase “In God We Trust” surrounding Abraham Lincoln’s bust. The word “liberty” appears on the left of the portrait, with the date on the right. Also available are an 1892-S Morgan Silver Dollar and a set of United States Mint 957-P/D coins.
