Gilbert Durán’s Art and Items to Sell With Vogt Auction Texas

Material from the estate of San Antonio artist Gilbert Durán will soon be offered for sale by Vogt Auction Texas. The 150-lot auction features the best of the artist’s works including original oil and watercolor paintings, sculptures, and San Antonio faux bois pieces.  Leading the catalog is an oil on board painting by Gilbert Durán, titled Frida Margarita. Durán’s colorful artworks frequently depict the themes of history and iconic culture associated with San Antonio, including Frida Kahlo. In this piece, the artist portrays Kahlo enjoying a frothy margarita on the rocks with salt, mixing two of Mexico’s most recognized products. Another key fine artwork by the artist from 1997 is Aztec Leopard, an oil on canvas featuring a leopard portrait with carved Aztec friezes.

A plaster grotto work by Gilbert Durán will be offered as well. Titled Grotto Study of Neptune Fountain Spout, the offered piece features a plastered wooden plank mounted with a seashell-encrusted fountain spout, a replica of the faux bois grotto built by Carlos Cortes. Also available from Durán is a Mexican credenza, a mid-century sideboard measuring ten feet with a large top painted in textured green and sliding glass doors that open with lighted interior storage. Bidders can also consider a rectangular mosaic with glass marbles, mirrors, and a wood frame; a steel butterfly sculpture atop an oversized steel sculpture on a plinth base; and more.
