Gertrude Abercrombie’s The Mysterious Stranger and Ed Paschke’s Canvas Now Available at HindmanFeb 10, 2023 10:00 CST
American painter Gertrude Abercrombie (1909 – 1977) was renowned for her enigmatic self-portraits and nocturnal landscape paintings. The imagery in her works evoked emotions of fear, anxiety, and loneliness. One of her artworks, titled The Mysterious Stranger (Man, House, and Lady), is a key highlight of this upcoming Hindman auction. This work prominently highlights a man in a maroon cape and black pants standing on a path that leads to a cubic house. The woman in the house (Abercrombie herself) is seen staring behind the open shutter of one of the windows, the rest of which are all closed including the door. This lot featuring a man, a woman, and a black cat characterizes Abercrombie’s Surrealistic style.
Another noteworthy artwork in the sale is an oil on linen canvas by American artist Ed Paschke (1939 – 2004). Heads in Love illustrates his focus on eye-popping paintings. Paschke made portrait-based art of cultural icons and often relied on photo imagery drawn directly from mass media. An untitled work by American painter Wolfgang Paalen also leads the listings. The oil on canvas, rendered in 1943, is vibrant with bold brushstrokes. To view the complete catalog and register to bid online, visit Hindman.
