Freeman’s Upcoming Sale Features Work by Charles Rosen, John Fulton Folinsbee, and More
Sep 20, 2023 11:00 EDTFreeman’s upcoming sale will present American fine art by the likes of Charles Rosen and John Fulton Folinsbee. Leading the auction is a 1911 oil painting titled Haystack (The Farm, Frosty Morning) by Charles Rosen, a Manhattan artist. Rosen was a prominent landscape artist who mainly adopted the Impressionist and Cubist-Realist styles in his works. The available lot was executed when Rosen was already a well-established artist in New Hope. He frequently depicted Impressionist winter landscape scenes of Pennsylvania. In this work, a haystack in a local farm is highlighted in shades of brown, pink, and gold.
Another notable lot is a painting by American artist John Fulton Folinsbee. Born in New York, Folinsbee showed a passion for art from an early age. At the age of nine, he attended art classes for children at the Buffalo Art Students’ League. He dabbled in various techniques, including Tonalist and Impressionist styles. Presented in this sale is Folinsbee’s Jersey Village, Winter made around 1917 to 1919. This plein-air painting portrays a view of New Jersey from across the Delaware River. Additional lots of interest include works by Mary Elizabeth Price, Rae Sloan Bredin, William Lathrop, and Joseph Stella.
