François Pompon ‘La Panthère Noire’ Sculpture and Régence Ormolu Kingwood Commode Lead Stair’s Upcoming Sale

French sculptor François Pompon (1855 – 1933) was famous for his polished, smoothly stylized animal sculptures. Born in Saulieu, France, Pompon shifted to Paris at the age of 20. There, he worked at the studios of several sculptors, including Auguste Rodin (1840 – 1917). The upcoming sale from STAIR will present a plaster model of La Panthère Noire (Panther) by Pompon. The work was rendered by the artist in 1925. Signed on the left hind leg is “POMP”. Union Française des Experts (UFE) member Jocelyn Reboul’s attestation accompanies this lot. Reboul describes this plaster model as one used by the foundry C. Valsuani to create the bronze edition of La Panthère Noire. 

A selection of furniture is available as well. A Régence ormolu-mounted kingwood commode is particularly notable. It is fitted with a molded serpentine-fronted marble top and brass fluting. The elegant chest of drawers comes with scrolling ormolu handles. The commode with kingwood parquetry raises on short-shaped legs. According to the auction catalog, the drawers slide well and the frame is sound. Collectors can also find fine ormolu clocks, figural bronzes, porcelains, and a pair of Louis XV/XVI painted fauteuils by Jean-Baptiste Boulard.
