Four-Session Sale From Oakridge Auction Gallery Surveys the Finest Chinese Works of Art
Sep 15, 2022 09:00 EDT - Sep 18, 2022 09:00 EDTOakridge Auction Gallery’s upcoming four-session sale includes hundreds of Asian art lots. The first session shines a spotlight on Chinese paintings and calligraphy. Top lots include landscape paintings by Zhang Daqian and Huang Zhou. A master of forgery, Zhang Daqian got his start by crafting convincing reproductions of ancient masterpieces. Among his most prized paintings are those he distributed to friends and acquaintances as gifts, as these were often personalized for the recipient. The available Zhang Daqian painting was executed in 1952 and given as a gift to Huang Zhongfu. In the work, a lone figure surveys a looming rock formation and waterfall. The available Huang Zhou painting shows two horses in motion, bursting with lively linework.
The second and third sessions of this event particularly feature Chinese ceramics, such as a Chinese blue and white vase from the Chongzhen period of the early 17th century. At this time, the Ming dynasty was coming to an end and imperial kilns were closing in rapid succession. Despite the political turbulence, civilian kilns thrived and created high-quality porcelain items. The available Chongzhen period vase dates back to that period and bears delicate flower decoration. Porcelain collectors can also consider a pair of Chinese blue and white bowls from the Wanli period of the Ming dynasty. Like many porcelain objects produced around this time, these bowls show evidence of global trade and the exchange of cultural imagery; they are covered in Sanskrit script and the word “Buddha” at their centers. Additional lots available in the auction sessions include Chinese huanghuali furniture, jade snuff bottles, Buddhist sculptures, and more.
