Fine Prints & Multiples

In 1984, National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry was assigned to photograph refugee camps along the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan. As he made rounds in the camps, he encountered a class of schoolgirls where one girl, in particular, stood out for her startling sea-green eyes. She was photographed by McCurry. Her portrait made its first appearance on the cover of the June 1986 National Geographic magazine. A print of the Afghan Girl photograph will be offered in the upcoming Fine Prints, Multiples & Photographs sale, presented by Skinner. National Geographic describes the subject’s eyes as “… haunted and haunting, and in them, you can read the tragedy of a land drained by war.” 

Among other photographs, Srinagar, Kashmir by Henri Cartier-Bresson is among the highlights of the auction.  Cartier-Bresson’s photographs often convey meaning, mystery, and humor through visual composition. The 20th-century artist worked to establish photojournalism as an art form throughout his career. Also featured in the sale is the work of William Wegman, a renowned American artist.
