The work of Françoise Gilot, an art critic, author, and postwar painter, will lead the upcoming Fine European Art Signature Auction presented by Heritage Auctions. Gilot’s oil painting entitled La Marionette will be included after remaining in her personal collection for over fifty years. Besides being an artist in her own right, Gilot was the muse and lover of Pablo Picasso. The painting featured in this sale depicts the artist and Picasso’s children, Claude and Paloma Picasso.
European artists featured in this sale include Alfred von Wierusz Kowalski, Anne Redpath, Armand Guillaumin, and others. A notable lot is a sketch from Henri Matisse. This piece depicts two views of a nude woman with crayons on paper. Another lot from Pierre-Auguste Renoir is highlighted as well. A drawing in sanguine pastel and pencil on tracing paper, it shows Renoir’s young son interacting with his nursemaid.
