Doyle to Auction Works by Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, Elaine De Kooning, and More
Mar 13, 2024 11:00 EDTDoyle will present its 20th Century Abstraction / Latin American Art auction this March. The sale features a 1948 painting by Mexican artist Diego Rivera. According to the auction house, American composer Irving Berlin commissioned Rivera to render the cover art for the sheet music to his song In Acapulco. This painting was never published and has remained with the Berlin family since then. Born in 1886 in Guanajuato, Mexico, Rivera was considered one of the significant figures in 20th-century art. Early in his career, he experimented with Cubism and gradually shifted to Post-Impressionism.
Another highlight of the sale is an oil on Masonite work titled Untitled (Day of the Dead) by José Clemente Orozco (1883 – 1949). Orozco was a Mexican artist best known for his political murals and Renaissance-style compositions. He typically used dark, ominous palettes like the one presented in this sale. Orozco’s works influenced American artists such as Philip Guston, Ben Shahn, Jackson Pollock, and Jacob Lawrence. Other notable lots in the upcoming auction include Elaine de Kooning’s Desert and Sea (Cave #15) and an oil on canvas by Ricardo Martinez titled Mujer con Vaso. The sale also includes prints, multiples, sculptures, and more. View the complete catalog of the 20th Century Abstraction / Latin American Art auction by visiting Doyle.
