The upcoming El Don Diego Luna Collection World Coins online event, offered by Heritage Auctions, is anchored by rare coins and paper money from Cuba. An example of the available coins is a Republic 40 Centavos piece from 1916, acknowledged by a third-party coin grading company as the second-finest known example. A newer but equally rare coin is a Republic “Balloon” Peso from 1984. The auction house calls it “[o]ne of the scarcest issues in the Cuban series.” It has been preserved in notably good condition.
Also for sale are error coins, including a Republic Mint 20 centavos piece that was struck 20% off-center. The error is so significant as to be noticeable to the naked eye. The piece has also been carefully preserved, which is unusual for a minting error.
Beyond coins, this month-long auction will also include Cuban paper money, including a Cuba Banco Español de la Habana one-peso bill from 1872. This single peso is graded in the “Very Fine 30” quality category and includes an ink stamp. View any of these lots and register to bid on Heritage Auctions.
