In the upcoming Coins Signature Auction, offered by Heritage Auctions, a 1907 $20 high relief coin will be on offer, the result of Augustus Saint-Gaudens and President Theodore Roosevelt’s shared pet project. They planned to make a coin reminiscent of those created in Hellenistic Greece. After Saint-Gaudens’s death, Roosevelt pressured the mint to begin production, ending with just over 12,000 samples. Red-tinted patina covers the luster on the sample available in this auction.
A few lots in this sale have been found from the 1992 Philadelphia and Denver-minted strikes, including a copper penny. The designer’s initials are located at the base of the Lincoln Memorial. Beyond coins, a rare silver ingot, one of 462 recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Gairsoppa in 2010, is also available. Most of the retrieved ingots were melted for bullion, but a few remain. Made of silver with a fineness of .999, the bar includes a Bombay Mint mark. View any of these lots and register to bid on Heritage Auctions.
