Charleston Renaissance Paintings, Confederate Memorabilia Available at Brunk Auctions
Jan 10, 2024 09:00 ESTA selection of Confederate memorabilia, fine art, and furniture will lead the upcoming Property from a Historic South Carolina Plantation | January 10 sale from Brunk Auctions. This includes a rare hand-sewn Confederate flag featuring 11 stars arranged in a crescent shape. During the American Civil War, it was made for the South Carolina Palmetto Battalion Light Artillery and was taken into combat several times throughout the siege of Charleston. Beginning in the summer of 1863, Union forces continuously attacked the South Carolinian city over both land and sea. Residents would not be evacuated for over 550 days. The available Confederate flag was formerly included in the Charles Gunther Collection and was later deaccessioned by the Chicago History Museum before entering the private market. Assorted cartes de visite depicting Confederate generals are also available.
Among fine art lots in the catalog, an oil on canvas painting by Alfred Heber Hutty is particularly notable. The Red Bud, dated 1922, depicts several tree trunks bordering a body of water. The scene is rendered in muted colors with thick, Impressionistic strokes. Hutty was a 20th-century artist who helped lead the Charleston Renaissance, a period when the city experienced an artistic and cultural boom between World War I and World War II. Paintings by Elliott Daingerfield, Elizabeth O’Neill Verner, and William Aiken Walker, as well as assorted silver items, will be offered.
