Brunk Auctions to Offer Signed Copy of the US Constitution, Archetype of the US Constitution, and Related Documents
Sep 28, 2024 14:00 EDTAn officially signed ratification copy of the United States Constitution and other important early American documents will lead the upcoming sale from Brunk Auctions. This nine-lot auction includes the pamphlet of the Constitution of the United States, approved by the Philadelphia Convention. In 1787, the Constitutional Convention met in Philadelphia to address weak central government problems arising from the Articles of Confederation. George Washington presided over the convention proceedings. The U.S. Constitution was established at the convention with broader powers for the federal government, including the ability to conduct foreign relations. The available document was printed by John Fenno in Philadelphia in 1791, and bears the signature S. Johnston, with a marble design cover that reads, Constitution of the United States.
Another notable lot in this upcoming auction is the initial draft of the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union among the 13 original colonies. The eight-page document was submitted by the committee formed by the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia on July 12, 1776. This was the first constitution of the United States and was in effect from 1777 until 1789 when the current constitution took effect. Bidders can consider the printed archetype of the U.S. Constitution, Joseph Hewes’ circular letter to the North Carolina inhabitants, and a reproduction of Emanuel Leutze’s 1851 painting, titled Washington Crossing the Delaware.
