British Writings on North America, Revolutionary War-Era Maps Available at Charlton Hall

The latest no reserve online sale from Charlton Hall presents a wide variety of rare books, manuscripts, autographs, and maps that span six centuries of history. Among the leading lots is a pamphlet from 1705 issued by the British House of Lords to Queen Anne regarding the Province of Carolina. The territory was partitioned into North and South a few years after this pamphlet was issued and would eventually become several American Southern states. This pamphlet is bound in contemporary red Morocco leather with tooled gilt lettering on the cover and spine. Another rare volume in the sale contains an early account of the Virginian territory by German engravers Theodor de Bry and Johann Theodor de Bry. The book contains several detailed illustrations, including the title plate and a double-page map of Virginia. 

A variety of Revolutionary War-era works will also cross the auction block in this sale. Leading this section of the catalog is a rare map of Harbour of Charles Town, South Carolina. Published in London in 1777, it includes a view of the town and harbor. This map comes from the monumental Atlantic Neptune, a North American atlas published in the 18th century. Other available maps show the British siege of Charleston during the Revolutionary War, a Florida sea chart from 1647, and a colorful view of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahamas from the late 18th century.
