Bonhams’ Upcoming Sale Offers Gilbert Munger’s Mount Shasta, Eyvind Earle’s Oil On Masonite, and More

Gilbert Davis Munger (1837 – 1903) was one of the most prolific American landscape painters of the 19th century. Munger, a largely self-trained artist, was born in Madison, Wisconsin. He pursued art at a young age. At 14, Munger worked as an engraver at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. A Munger painting titled Mount Shasta (with Indians and Encampment) is available in the upcoming California & Western Art Online auction, offered by Bonhams. This framed canvas is signed ‘Gilbert Munger’ on the lower left of the canvas. It depicts the magnificent Mount Shasta from the west and highlights Native Americans on horseback. The available lot demonstrates the artist’s skill at painting panoramic compositions that are rich with detail and realism.  

Another notable lot is Santa Ynez California Hillside & Grassland with Cows (circa 1969) by Eyvind Earle (1916 – 2000). It is an oil on Masonite by an American artist and illustrator famous for his painted backgrounds for Disney’s classic films. Born in New York, Earle began painting at a young age. When he was 14, he held his first gallery solo show in France. By 23, he sold his first watercolor to the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art for its permanent collection. Collectors can also consider an oil on canvas titled Morning Ferry by Jack Laycox (1921 – 1984), a bronze sculpture with a brown patina by Keith Christie (1935 – 2017), and an oil on Masonite titled Baie St. Paul by René Jean Richard.
