Bonhams’ Home & Interiors Sale Offers 20th-Century English Fine Art, Grand Tour Marble Sculptures

A popular and successful seascape artist of the 20th century, Montague Dawson specialized in depicting clipper ships from the 19th century and earlier. His works were noted for their intense realism and sense of movement. Available in Bonhams’ upcoming Home & Interiors sale is a seascape painting by Dawson depicting the Torrens in California waters. The oil on canvas is signed in the lower left. This piece has resided in a private Santa Rosa Valley collection since being sold with Coeur d’Alene Art Auction in 2017. Other notable fine artworks in the sale include a painting of Suffolk hounds by Edward Robert Smythe and a portrait of a lady by Spanish artist Rogelio de Egusquiza. 

In addition to the fine art lots, this catalog presents a range of antique sculptures and furniture items. Leading this section of the sale is a Roman Grand Tour-type carved marble model of a panther. Carved in the second half of the 19th century in the manner of Antonio Moglia or Francesco Antonio Franzoni, this piece was likely created as a souvenir piece for European youths stopping in Rome during a lengthy European trip. It is possibly made of rare giallo tigrato marble with black spots mottling a yellow surface. Bidders can also consider an extensive Versace for Rosenthal dinner service in the Medusa pattern, a pair of Venetian etched armorial pier mirrors, and a set of 12 George II dining chairs.
