Americana is the comforting image of America at its best. Even though America is a relatively young country, Americana is nostalgia for the most iconic moments in its history, from its founding in the 18th century to images of baseball, Route 66, and apple pie from the 20th century. The Americana auction, presented by Stair Auctions, is primarily a collection of furniture and both decorative and fine art that represent classic American styles.
Passed down through generations, is a Hadley blanket chest made with Connecticut pine. The chest was owned by Dr. Joseph Lynde of Hartford, Connecticut and his wife in the 1790s. A hand-written note from the 1960s by one of Dr. Lynde’s descendants describing the chest’s history is included with this lot. The piece shows some wear that is consistent with the age and use of the desk.
Several pieces in this auction have a connection to the Founding Fathers of America, including an autographed letter from Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton was the founder of America’s financial system, among many other accomplishments. The letter, from February 1793, asks for an advanced payment to be made to the Senators of the United States.
