Americana, Folk Art & Native American From Estates & Collections Sale Features Work by Eddie Arning, Howard Finster, and More

New England Auctions’ upcoming sale, featuring works from various estates and collections, will present over 450 lots of fine Americana, folk art, and Native American pieces.  Leading the sale is a Cray-pas on paper painting by Eddie Arning, a Texas-born artist. The drawings by Eddie Arning depicting rural life and popular culture play an important role in the oeuvre of American outsider art. In Arning’s work, all surface elements are utilized, and color and composition are fully explored. Using multiple frameworks, Arning presented stylized human forms in flat pictorial environments. Although the artist was severely isolated and had no formal art training, Arning’s art is often portrayed as an example of long-lost modernism with its stark minimalism and stylized figuration.

Other notable lots in the sale include Howard Finster’s carved and painted wooden sculpture titled Giraffe and Cat. In the “outsider art” movement, Howard Finster is considered to be among the foremost and most popular artists. A self-taught artist, Finster blended religious and spiritual imagery into his paintings, applying tractor enamel on various surfaces. His works included Elvis pictures, eschatological visions, and several scripture-infused pieces. Also available is a folk art doll made from fabric by Julia Beecher.
