Briggs Auction, Inc.’s upcoming sale will present a single-owner lifetime collection of Peter Rabbit memorabilia. The large and varied catalog includes illustrations, books, and collectibles related to the character. First imagined by Beatrix Potter in 1893, Peter Rabbit officially debuted in 1902 with the publication of The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Other authors soon adapted the character to launch their own stories. These included Thornton Burgess, a prolific American author of children’s stories. Burgess’ version of Peter Rabbit was illustrated by Harrison Cady and published in comic strip form. This auction features numerous drawings of Peter Rabbit by Cady. Among the top lots is a Harrison Cady signed watercolor painting showing a dapper Peter standing by a pond while other woodland creatures jump around him. Other available illustrations show recurring friends and foes in Peter’s world, including bears, foxes, and hippos.
Several dolls and figurines depicting Thornton Burgess’ version of Peter Rabbit are also available. Many were produced by the Quaddy Playthings Manufacturing Company during the 1910s. Particularly notable is a set of three Peter Rabbit Quaddy dolls with hand-painted heads and wool clothing. Other available lots include sets of Peter Rabbit postcards, books, and club pins.
