Akiba Antiques Presents Cold War-Era Periscope, Art Deco Revival Panels

After the Art Deco fever reached its height in the late 1920s, the extravagant style retreated for several decades. Sleek modernism took its place as the favored interior design style in the United States. However, Art Deco witnessed a resurgence in the 1960s and 70s. Glamor, excess, and wealth again dominated the mainstream, contributing to an Art Deco revival. Renowned interior designer and glass artist Dennis Abbe was among those steering the renewed Art Deco movement. This upcoming sale from Akiba Antiques particularly highlights a pair of Art Deco Revival frosted glass panels from Abbe. Featuring two elegant Egyptian women, the panels include scarab accents and swirling lines. 

Also notable is a binocular periscope from the Cold War period. German manufacturer Carl Zeiss AG designed this periscope, and it was originally used for observation across the East and West Berlin border. It dates back to the mid- to late 1950s. Bidders can also consider an original painting by Armenian artist Gevorg Yeghiazarian. Preoccupied with the boundary between the real and the imaginary, Yeghiazarian is known for luminous figural paintings executed in bold colors.
