A 19th-Century Trade Sign, Toy Jalopy with Dagwood and Blondie Lead July Americana Discovery Auction
Jul 25, 2023 10:00 EDTOne of the first sets of 3D glasses was created and used in 1838 by Charles Wheatstone. He applied principles of stereopsis, the ability to perceive depth, and made the first 3D viewing device: the stereoscope. A technological marvel for its time, the device allowed the viewing of separate images from the left eye and right eye to create a single three-dimensional image. Sir David Brewster remodeled the stereoscope to produce the first portable 3D viewing device. A 19th-century large, historic trade sign that resembles 3D eyeglasses with red and blue glass is a leading lot in the upcoming July Americana Discovery Auction from New England Auctions. Made with molded zinc or tin, the frame is covered in gold paint, still intact with some signs of wear. An American Blackhawk horse weathervane with a natural verdigris patina from circa 1875 will also be available.
Blondie’s Jalopy, a mini wooden car, is another notable lot. It is a lithographed tin “Sunshine Car” in vivid yellow. The fender and bumper have emerging heads of Dagwood and Blondie. When wound, the car rolls along, causing Blondie and Dagwood to bounce up and down, their loosely attached hats appearing to be blowing in the wind. It is an American toy made around the 1930s. The auction will offer collectibles like fireman’s hats, rocking Shaker chairs with red and tan woven seats, and more.
