Born in Almería, Spain, Federico Castellon’s parents moved to the United States when he was seven years old. As a Spanish-speaking child with limited English skills, he was often ostracized by his peers and was held back in school for two years. To save his sanity, Castellon turned to drawing. Mostly self-taught, Castellon worked in every media but remains best known for his early graphic work, particularly his etchings. Included in the upcoming 20th Century Fine Art auction, presented by Stair Galleries, are various etchings by Castellon.
The sale offers works from Realism, early Modernism, Surrealism, Minimalism, and other post-modern movements. Included in the auction are works after Marc Chagall, Eugene Higgins, Salvador Dalí, Leonard Baskin, and Christo. Among the highlighted pieces is an untitled, mixed media piece by French sculptor and illustrator Henri Laurens. A painting of Venitian buildings in various shades of orange, pink, and blue by abstract artist Murray Hantman will be offered as well.
