A handcrafted 18-karat gold, emerald, and diamond floral brooch will lead the upcoming New York City Estate Auction, offered by Auctions at Showplace. The rose-shaped brooch features 87 prong-set round brilliant-cut emeralds weighing approximately 4.35 carats. It is further adorned with 94 bead set single-cut diamonds weighing a total of 1.88 carats. The stem is set in yellow gold and the leaves are decorated with marquise-cut, pear-cut yellow diamonds and green diamonds. It can be worn through fabric with a double pinstem. This brooch is from a New York City collection. A Chicoree mahogany sideboard by furniture designer Louis Majorelle is another notable lot. Made in 1905, this carved sideboard in opulent Art Nouveau style has upper and lower cabinets. The upper cabinet comes with an arched bonnet top. It is placed above two glazed doors between trailing foliate carvings and two shaped curio shelves. Born in Toul, France, Majorelle was considered one of the leading exponents of the Art Nouveau style. He manufactured his own designs, in the French tradition of the ébéniste. Among the top lots in the catalog is a yellow gold pendant featuring a 1904 American $20 gold coin. The coin is framed in a 14-karat gold pendant threaded with an 18-karat gold braided chain. The featured Liberty Head double eagle coin was minted in San Francisco. Another notable gold collectible in the catalog is a medal minted by the National Bank of Iran (Bank Melli Iran) in 1976 to celebrate the golden jubilee of the Pahlavi dynasty. The medal’s obverse portrays the likenesses of Mohammad Reza Shah and his father, Reza Shah Pahlavi. On the reverse is an image of the bank’s façade. Assorted silverware and porcelain sets will also be available in this upcoming sale. This includes a mid-20th-century sterling silver flatware service for 14. Each piece is stamped with marks for S. Other notable lots include a Judaica sterling silver Torah crown from the early 20th century and a Michel Ducaroy Modernist sectional "Togo" sofa. The sofa was created for the French modern furniture company Ligne Roset. It is a chocolate brown upholstered couch comprising five seat sections and a corner. Auctions at Showplace will offer an Erté "Tree of Life" gilt bronze menorah. This menorah/candelabrum was designed in 1987 and features pine-like designs, with two long-feathered birds perched on the holders and roots stemming out as its base stand. Erté was born Romain de Tirtoff (Russian/French, 1892 - 1990). “Erté” was a pseudonym used to conceal his family reputation. He was expected to take on the family tradition and become a Russian naval officer. Instead, Erté became a pioneering figure of the Art Deco period. He designed several covers for Harper's Bazaar, stage costumes for performers like Mata Hari, and even limited-edition bottle designs for Courvoisier to show the different stages of the cognac-making process. A total of 21 rose-cut diamonds that together weigh approximately 3.50 carats are featured in the brooch. With delicately-wrought details, the brooch was designed to resemble a bouquet of flowers. It comes to auction with an estimate of USD 2,000 to $4,000. A rose-cut diamond is easily identifiable by its flat bottom. Rose-cut diamonds also feature fewer cuts than other styles, which prioritize sparkle and depth. Rose-cut diamonds have been around for centuries, though their popularity dipped in the 20th century as cutting techniques grew more sophisticated. Reed & Barton 14K Jockey Club Gold Cup 1973 Trophy Leading the Important Fine Art & Design Auction is a Reed and Barton Jockey Club gold cup in 14-karat yellow gold (lot #50; estimate: USD 60,000 - $80,000). It is a lidded trophy with two handles in the Neoclassical Revival manner. The gold trophy was awarded to Prove Out of Hobeau Farms in 1973. Prove Out was a racehorse, born in 1969, who was bred in Kentucky by owner Jack Dreyfus (American, 1913 - 2009). Prove Out was trained by H. Allen Jerkens (American, 1929 - 2015) for the Aqueduct Racetrack 1973 race. Prove Out won this trophy for Hobeau Farm when jockey Jorge Velasquez (American, b. 1946) was the rider. Platinum Ceylon/No Heat Sapphire Diamond Ring, AGL Among jewelry lots, the auction will offer a rare, 3.80-carat Ceylon blue sapphire ring (lot #21; estimate: $8,000 - $12,000). This platinum ring, brightly polished, features a centered prong-set cushion-cut blue sapphire. The sapphire comes with an AGL report indicating the sapphire is natural from Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). The Buccellati style is an evolution born from its originator, Mario Buccellati. The “Prince of Goldsmiths” founded the Maison in 1919. Since its beginning a century ago, the Buccellati family firm has become synonymous with tradition, creativity, and skill. Buccellati's craftsmanship revolves around intricate textural details inspired by Venetian lace, Etruscan patterns, Italian vegetation, insects, and animals. Born and nurtured during apprenticeship with his father Mario, Gianmaria Buccellati (Italian, 1929 - 2015) began his love affair with stones. This led Gianmaria Buccellati to found the Italian Gemological Institute (IGI) with some of his colleagues. Gianmaria would preside over the organization for 25 years. A silver and malachite centerpiece by Gianmaria Buccellati is available in the upcoming New York City Estate Auction, presented by Auctions at Showplace. Building on the iconic Buccellati leaf jewelry and silver pieces, this unusual hand-signed piece incorporates a large-sized malachite specimen issuing a cornucopia of harvest fruits. Another striking contemporary piece is an Italian modern mosaic glass sideboard cabinet. It is adorned with a geometric design in reverse painted glass panels in black, white, blues, and grays. The cabinet has two central doors opening to two shelves, flanked by two doors with two short drawers above. With brass bar pulls, the body is mounted on four tapered gold-tone brass legs. Manierre Dawson was not confident about showcasing his paintings when asked by Arthur Bowen Davies to participate in the International Exhibition of Modern Art, better known as the Armory Show, in 1912. Nevertheless, Dawson (1887 - 1969) exhibited in Chicago and launched his career as a successful avant garde and Cubist artist. An untitled oil painting attributed to Dawson will lead this upcoming New York City Estate Auction, offered by Auctions at Showplace. It is a wood board painting depicting an abstract Cubist composition dated 1912. It is housed in a carved gilt wood frame. Another leading lot is a set of three 20-karat yellow gold bangles. All three are distinct, with different enamel colors and engraved designs. They can be worn as slip-over-the-wrist fixed bangles. Notable collectibles in the sale include Cedric Hartman bronze model ‘91 CO floor lamps and an antique Persian silver tray. Designed in 1978, the bases of the Hartman lamps are signed "Cedric Hartman Omaha." Hartman (American, b. 1929) is a contemporary artist born in 1929. The lamps available in the sale are made of stainless steel, brass, and aluminum. They have a CO Reflector shield, with 120V Philips dual envelope halogen. The reflector rotates 155 degrees on the socket, and the socket rotates 180 degrees on a vertical pivot. In those days, Sèvres porcelain objects were often combined with exquisite ormolu decorative mounting. Ormolu is a bronze gilding technique that involves application of a ground, high-karat gold-mercury blend to the surface. The upcoming sale from Showplace Antiques will feature a pair of Sèvres ormolu porcelain urns with gilt bronze mounted bases and handles. Each piece is adorned with hand-painted scenes of landscapes and courting lovers on a cobalt blue background. The covers are ornamented with pinecone form finials. Another highlight is a credenza inspired by Dorothy Draper. The rectangular-shaped black and white credenza has black lacquered corps accented by white lacquered paneling. It consists of three short drawers flanked by two cabinets. An oil on canvas artwork depicting a classical scene of Artemis, goddess of the hunt, also leads the catalog. Among the top lots is a 1980 brass sculpture by de Rivera, an Abstract Expressionist sculptor best known for his curvilinear bronze and steel works. De Rivera is renowned for Infinity (1967), a polished steel arabesque constructed from a steel plate and threaded rod. It is installed on the National Mall in front of the National Museum of History and Technology in Washington, D.C. The available work, titled Construction No. 280, is a kinetic sculpture in brass mounted on a motorized pedestal of black lacquer. Using abstract constructions, de Rivera explored space, motion, and light, resulting in commissions for the World's Fair and public works for museums, airports, hotels, and colleges. Other notable lots in the sale include paintings by Winston Roeth. In his paintings, Roeth explores issues of color, light, and space from a phenomenological perspective. In order to experiment with the surface extensively, the artist applies several layers of pigments mixed with polyurethane dispersion and water.
