PAI’s 84th Rare Posters Auction LXXXIV on July 20th totals $1.9M in sales; Mucha steals the show.
New York, NY – July 30, 2021 — Poster Auctions International’s (PAI) second sale of the year, on July 20th, finished at $1.9 million in sales. Rare Posters Auction LXXXIV demonstrated a continued passion for the masters of the poster—namely, Alphonse Mucha. Jack Rennert, President of PAI, said, “This auction, collectors proved the enduring charm of Art Nouveau masters, and particularly that of Alphonse Mucha, whose Belle Époque works have a timeless appeal for seasoned and new collectors alike. There’s no question that Mucha was the star of this sale. But the strength of Art Nouveau works did not diminish the enthusiasm for Art Deco designs, as witnessed by our strong sales of works by Broders, Cassandre, and Loupot. As always, early designs for the circus continue to excite poster lovers, as evidenced by Pal’s billboard for Lord John Sanger.” Alphonse Mucha, The Stars. 1902. $120,000. Indeed, collectors clamored for works from the master of Belle Époque beauty, Alphonse Mucha. His lush and evocative designs encouraged fierce bidding and record-breaking sales. His ethereal 1902 series of four decorative panels, The Stars, was the auction’s top lot, at $120,000 (est. $60,000-$70,000). His first-ever poster, Gismonda / Théâtre de la Renaissance, from 1894, beat all previous results for a winning bid of $50,400 (est. $20,000-$25,000). And his luminous Cycles Perfecta, from 1902, received a winning bid of $40,800 (est. $25,000-$30,000). Even a Lefèvre-Utile tin bucket designed by Mucha caused passionate bidding, earning a win of $9,000 (est. $1,700-$2,000). All prices quoted include the buyer’s premium. Another master of the Art Nouveau era, Toulouse-Lautrec’s works sold reliably well at auction. His top sale was for the 1892 limited edition print, La Goulue et sa Sœur, which sold for $78,000. His serpentine 1899 Jane Avril was sold for $72,000; the 1892 Reine de Joie was won for $66,000; his 1896 The Ault & Wiborg Co. / Au Concert went for $60,000. Other gems of the Art Nouveau era delighted collectors. Ferdinand Lunel’s celestial Rouxel & Dubois bicycle poster, from ca. 1894, was sold for $6,600. Artist to Know: Alphonse Mucha
Sworders Presents Signed Lithograph Pair from Art Nouveau Poster Artist On December 26th, 1894, French stage actress Sarah Bernhardt needed a new advertisement for her play Gismonda, and she needed it fast. Bernhardt was connected to rising Czech artist Alphonse Mucha, one of the few designers in Paris not on vacation at the time. Within a week, Mucha produced a poster for her that is now considered a cornerstone of the Art Nouveau movement. Highly stylized posters would become the trademark of Mucha’s long and successful career. Two Alphonse Mucha art prints will come to auction on September 8th, 2020, at 10:00 AM WEST (5:00 AM EDT) with Sworders. Find out more about Alphonse Mucha’s life and legacy before the online bidding begins. Alphonse Mucha in front of his Gismonda poster. Image from the Mucha Trust. Born in a small Moravian town in the present-day Czech Republic, Mucha’s childhood was marked by violence and a cholera epidemic. Mucha’s interest in art grew out of these traumas and was cultivated under the influence of the Catholic Church. He would go on to study art in Vienna and Munich before landing in Paris, the city that would allow his career to take off. Alphonse Mucha’s poster for Gismonda played a key role in the artist’s life and in the burgeoning Art Nouveau movement. After it was released, it caused nothing short of a sensation in Paris. Audience members and everyday people were stealing the posters from the streets to sell and admire. “I predict fame for you,” Bernhardt told Mucha in the aftermath. Her prediction soon proved accurate. Mucha continued to create posters for Bernhardt’s performances for the next six years, leading to unprecedented commercial success. Alphonse Mucha, Poster for ‘Gismonda,’ 1894. Image from the Mucha Foundation. Alphonse Mucha’s paintings and posters followed consistent themes, many showing idealized women surrounded by flowers, swirling patterns, and elaborate costumes. His work juxtaposed the craft and style of high art with the common, everyday poster that could be easily printed and distributed. Mucha’s early innovations also created a lasting association with Art Nouveau. “Mucha is…

We were also pleased with the ongoing response to Art Nouveau works, which have proven to captivate both new and seasoned collectors.” The great mythologizer of Montmartre, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, maintained his appeal to bidders. His 1894 Eldorado / Aristide Bruant, originally denigrated by the venue’s management, reached its highest sales price in our auction history: $78,000 (all prices include premiums). Rare Posters
Featured in the upcoming Rare Posters auction, offered by Rennert’s Gallery, is a set of four Art Nouveau posters from Alphonse Mucha. Each woman portrayed on the posters represents a gemstone—emerald, amethyst, ruby, and topaz. Mucha, a Czech artist who gained renown for his commercial works, simplified his highly decorative style in these pieces to focus on more clearly defined forms. His subjects pose evocatively in flowing dresses, surrounded by flowers. According to The Art Story, Mucha “... celebrated femininity as the antidote to an overly-industrialized, impersonal, ‘masculine’ world.” Over 30 posters by Alphonse Mucha will be available in this auction. Other leading lots include works from Jean Dupas and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Ambassadeurs / Aristide Bruant, a poster by the latter artist, depicts a leading cabaret singer of Paris’ Montmartre neighborhood. The subject’s face is detailed, but the poster is dominated by his red scarf and wooden walking stick. Bruant, the singer, refused to perform in his nightclub until the streets of the city were plastered with this poster. The image has since become one of Toulouse-Lautrec’s most-recognized works. Advertising posters are highlighted in the sale as well, selling Bellanger cars and Ricqlès peppermint extract. View the complete catalog and register to bid by visiting Rennert’s Gallery.

Poster by Charles Loupot, titled Nicolas, from 1933, soars to $72,000 at PAI’s Rare Posters Auction #78
Charles Loupot, Nicolas, 1933 ($72,000)Poster Auctions International New York, NY – July 2, 2019 — Poster Auctions International’s second sale of the year finished at $1,300,000 in sales. Auction LXXVIII on June 23 elicited enthusiasm for uncommon and little-known works by masters of Art Deco and Art Nouveau. Charles Loupot sparked a frenzy of bidding for his never-before-seen designs. “Nicolas,” from 1933, secured the highest bid at auction: $72,000 (all figures include sales premiums). The Art Deco master’s interpretation of Nectar, the wine deliveryman for the Nicolas firm, has appropriately become an advertising icon—but this particular poster is the only known copy of the design with letters. Loupot also stunned poster lovers with two of his earliest and previously unknown lithographs: “Parfums Naturels / Parrot” and “Parfums Naturels / Butterflies,” both from 1916, sold for $3,840 and $5,520, respectively. The artist also caused a stir with the divine “Au Louvre” from 1923; this variant, without letters, was won for $15,600. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, May Milton, 1895 ($31,200)Poster Auctions International This auction included a very notable Art Deco design: Guillermo Laborde’s 1930 “1er Campeonato Mundial Football / Uruguay,” which promoted the first ever FIFA World Cup in Montevideo. The charming design combined with the historical significance of this work made for a very desirable collector’s item. The poster exceeded its estimate of $2,500-$3,000 with a winning bid of $8,400. Luciano Achille Mauzan inspired further ardor for uncommon works of the 1920s and 1930s. This auction featured two of his never-before-seen posters for French perfume—and his image of a flirtatious lady leaning over a dramatically oversized rose spurred competitive bidding. “Brixia / Crème et Poudre à la Rose,” from ca. 1924, also surpassed its estimate of $7,000-$9,000 for a total of $13,200. Alphonse Mucha, La Dame aux Camelias, 1896 ($28,800)Poster Auctions International Similarly, Marcello Dudovich proved his prowess with early 20th century lithographs, especially his large-scale works. His theatrical still life, “Marca Zenit / G. B. Borsalino,” from 1911, was swept away for $14,400; the intoxicating “Cordial Campari,” from 1914, earned a grand $21,600. Of course, Art Nouveau posters continued to persuade…
