Featuring 60 exhibitors, the virtual fair brings together a dynamic group of leading international dealers that represent a diverse and global mix of fine and decorative arts from ancient times to the present day. The Show is New York’s longest-running art, antiques, and design fair, established in 1954 by East Side House Settlement to benefit the community based organization’s critical mission serving the Bronx and Northern Manhattan. All net proceeds from The Winter Show’s VIP Preview Access and any additional donations directly benefit East Side House and contribute substantially to the organization’s life-changing work. The Winter Show’s new online platform allows exhibitors to present works in a variety of formats including a three-dimensional virtual gallery exhibition, featuring up to twenty artworks and objects at a time. Visitors are able to take in the digital presentations as a whole and view close-up, detailed views of the range of works displayed. The new platform also provides a space for discussion and engagement, offering virtual “office hours” for visitors to connect with dealers directly by phone, text, or video chat via Zoom. A week after our team got a sneak preview of New York’s Winter Show, we headed back to Park Avenue Armory one last time to see how the event is wrapping up. The Winter Show is an antique and art fair that has brought dealers and collectors together for 66 years. The public’s last day to visit the event is this Sunday, February 2nd. One of the big takeaways from our return to The Winter Show is how much success the event's vendors are experiencing. We had the pleasure of talking to Frank Levy of Bernard & S. Dean Levy on our first trip to this year's Winter Show. At the time, one of his featured pieces at the event was a clawfoot sofa once owned by Henry Ford. That piece sold on The Winter Show's opening night. Frank Levy is the owner of Bernard & S. Dean Levy, Inc. in New York City, New York. Fellow Americana dealer Taylor Thistlethwaite of Thistlethwaite Americana believes The Winter Show is the premier event to sell his high-end items. "I found out about getting into the show about six months ago," Thistlethwaite told us at the event. "So the minute I found out, I was like: ‘pedal to the metal, we gotta find some treasure.’” W. Taylor Thistlethwaite Thistlethwaite founded Thistlethwaite Americana in 2013. He wanted to share both his knowledge and enthusiasm for antique collecting with the public. Among his highlighted pieces from this year’s event is The Quintet by African-American artist Ernie Barnes. But Thistlethwaite told us that he already has a piece in mind for next year. "You're always on the hunt for the best pieces...you always have this nagging little thing in the back of your mind going: 'What am I going to bring to The Winter Show?'" This Thursday, the Auction Daily team got a sneak preview of The Winter Show. The art and antique fair opened to the public on Friday, January 24th, in New York City’s Park Avenue Armory. It will close on Sunday, February 2nd. Helen Allen, executive director of The Winter Show, and others began the day with opening remarks to members of the press. In the background, we could already spot paintings by Diego Velázquez and Francisco de Zurbarán, an early sign of the event's high-end offerings. In 2020, the event features pieces from 72 world-renowned dealers in fine and decorative arts. Most importantly, though, all proceeds from admission and the Opening Night Party go to the East Side House. The non-profit offers workforce training and other opportunities to underprivileged people in New York City. Leah Rosenzweig of The Art Newspaper called this year's Winter Show the most diverse in event history. “It looks like the Metropolitan Museum [with] price tags,” gallery owner Ben Macklowe told Rosenzweig. It is easy to see why this year’s event is earning a reputation for diversity. While we were greeted by paintings by art world icons like Velázquez and Zurbarán, we soon ran into a full display of lamps from Tiffany Studios, on offer from Lillian Nassau. By Lita Solis-Cohen The Winter Show celebrated its 65th year, a sapphire jubilee, January 17-27, at the Park Avenue Armory. There were sapphire lights projected on the ceiling and on the front of the loan exhibition, Collecting Nantucket/Connecting the World. Many at the preview party wore sapphire blue, making it an even more festive occasion. As many do when they reach that magical year of 65, making them eligible for Medicare, the show made an effort to seem younger and be more streamlined and well disciplined in order to make sure the coming years will be a time of creative growth and longevity. The show took a new and simpler name—The Winter Show—leaving the word antiques behind because the show includes 5000 years of art and artifacts from ancient times to modern design, and because painting and sculpture of high quality is a sizable presence. Frank Levy of Bernard and S. Dean Levy, New York City, asked Ralph Harvard to design his stand. Because he had several pieces with carved shells, Harvard put wallpaper printed with shells on the walls and then added blue water up to the chair rail. The three-shell chest of drawers with a molded tray top, probably made in Rhode Island but possibly from eastern Connecticut, circa 1800, sold for a price in the mid-six figures. It was once in the Reginald Lewis collection in Easton, Maryland, and it had been owned by Joe Kindig. A nearly identical chest is in the collection of Bayou Bend. The Humphreys family looking glass above it, circa 1750, was possibly owned by James Humphreys in Philadelphia. “J. Humphreys” is written on the backboard. It was $65,000. Child in a White Dress Holding a Basket of Berries, a portrait of Betsey Avery Brewster (1798-1838), painted by John Brewster Jr., Hampton, Connecticut, oil on canvas, 31″ x 22″, in a period carved and gilded frame, signed on the stretcher “J Brewster limner.” As did a portrait of her sister, Betsey’s portrait came down in the Brewster family until 1986 when dealer Bill Samaha bought them.
