The Journey of a Contemporary Collection from Abstract to Figurative Art

In twelve works, the collection that a couple began in 1980 proves that abstract and figurative art are not mutually exclusive. Victor Vasarely (1906-1997), Bi-Syrom, 1956/76, acrylic on canvas, 71 x 108 cm/27.95 x 42.51 in (detail).Estimate: €80,000/120,000 Dialogue keeps a collection alive, dynamic and coherent. A look at Dr. Jean-Charles C. and his wife Christiane M.’s paintings makes it obvious that they not only must have frequently talked to understand what motivated each other's choices and preferences, but also enjoyed conversations about the artworks. They collected “objects that speak to you rather than objects that are spoken about,” says Nicolas Landau, the “Prince of Antique Dealers”. “It’s more a selection than a collection,” adds Auction Art auctioneer Grégoire Veyres. “Each piece was carefully chosen to get straight to the point. They attest to the desire to seek the best in an artist.” In the late 1980s, the Lyon-born couple visited Jacques Verrière’s gallery, one of the city’s few contemporary art galleries, with Denise Mermillon’s and the Espace Saint-Georges. Drawn to a painting by André Lanskoy (1902-1976), they took the plunge and made their first purchase. Like many artists who attended the Grande Chaumière School in the Montparnasse quarter in the late 1930s, Lanskoy was an abstract painter. The work the couple acquired, offered here at €20,000/30,000, is a prime example of his talent, combining a varied palette of colors and rigorous triangulation. Lanskoy was among the first to pave the way towards lyrical abstraction, which many New York artists would emulate after the Second World War. During a trip to Paris shortly after purchasing Lanskoy’s painting, “Jean-Charles and Christiane were amazed by the vanishing point in Maria Elena Vieira da Silva’s Drive In, a 1971 tempera on paper (€30,000/40,000) they saw in Jeanne Bucher’s gallery,” says Mr. Veyres. The couple bought it. In the spirit of discovering the Second Paris School, next came Hans Hartung’s pastel P.1961-51 (€20,000/30,000), Serge Poliakoff’s gouache Composition with White Triangle (€15,000/20,000) and an abstract, geometrical oil on canvas by Chilean painter Roberto Matta (€20,000/30,000). Maria Elena Vieira da Silva (1908-1992), Drive In, 1972, tempera on paper, 30.5 x 57.5 cm/12.00 x 22.63 in.Estimate: €30,000/40,000 An Endless Quest…

Contemporary Masterpieces at Auction in Korea This March

Works by domestic and foreign artists representing contemporary art will be auctioned in March at K Auction and Seoul Auction, the two largest auction houses in Korea. French abstract painter Bernard Frize's Gawk. Image courtesy of K Auction. K Auction will present 98 pieces, worth about $5.7 million, at its headquarters in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on March 20. The most notable lot is French abstract painter Bernard Frize's Gawk (estimated USD 150,000 - $230,000). His work, which is rarely seen at domestic auctions, stands out with a restrained grid pattern and a feast of colors stacked in layers. Ugo Rondinone's Einundzwanzigsterdezemberzweitausendeinundzwanzig (estimate: $140,000 - $190,000) beautifully captures the changes of colors and lights over time. Bidders can also consider Damien Hirst's Psalm 115: Non Novis, Domine (estimate: $190,000 - $300,000). As for Korean artists, contemporary masterpieces by monochromatic masters such as Kim Whan-ki, Kim Tschang-yeul, and Lee Ufan are looking for a new owner. Two works that Kim Whan-ki painted in oil on newspapers during his New York era will be auctioned. These works are meaningful in that they can infer the process until dot painting was completed; they served as the foundation for the birth of dot painting. Six works by Water Drops artist Kim Tschang-yeul will be exhibited, including Waterdrops SA0001 (estimate: $140,000 - $230,000). There will be a total of five works by Lee Ufan, including Correspondence (estimate: $260,000 - $410,000), With Winds (estimate: $83,000 - $170,000), and Dialogue (estimate: $68,000 - $150,000). In addition, Nucleus 87-09 (estimate: $160,000 - $340,000) by Lee Seung-jio, a leading Korean abstract artist, and Scape (estimate: $64,000 - $110,000) by Choi Wook-kyung, a pioneer of Abstract Expressionism, will be exhibited. Two works by Lee Kangso, a master of experimental art, will also be auctioned off: From an Island-07240 (estimate: $60,000 - $190,000) and Emptiness-15016 (estimate: $49,000 - $90,000). K Auction Hosts First Sale of 2024 With Modern and Contemporary Masterpieces

The first Korean art auctions of the new year will be held amid an overall downturn in the Korean art market. K Auction will hold a sale in January at its headquarters in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on the 24th, presenting works by modern and contemporary Korean masters. A total of 93 works together worth about USD 6.65 million will be exhibited. Kim Tschang-yeul's Genesis. Image courtesy of K Auction. One interesting work in this auction is artist Kim Tschang-yeul's Genesis (1979). It is a large-scale work measuring 1.6 meters by 1.95 meters with an estimated price of $460,000 to $760,000. The most expensive Kim Tschang-yeul work appeared at auction shortly after his death in January 2021, when Water Drop (1977) sold for about $780,000. Including overseas auctions, CSH 1 (1978) notably sold with Christie's Hong Kong in May of the same year for HKD 9.85 million (USD 1.05 million). Genesis, which will be auctioned in January, depicts water droplets seemingly flowing down and soaking the canvas. "The water droplet marks look like tears with scars from war," K Auction said. "Many water droplets form thin or thick shapes and capture the universe in them." Park Seo-bo's Écriture No. 080612. Image courtesy of K Auction. Park Seo-bo, who passed away last year, is represented in the catalog with six drawings. An early Écriture work (1980), which features repetitive pencil drawing, is estimated at $37,000 to $61,000, and the brightly-colored Écriture No. 080612 (2008) is estimated at $440,000 to $610,000. Rare Painting by Tyeb Mehta Bags Top Price at Saffronart’s Summer Auction of Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art

Saffronart unveiled its highly anticipated Summer Online Auction of Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art in June of 2023. It presented an impressive catalog of South Asian art, which provided an excellent opportunity for both seasoned collectors and art novices. The contemporary South Asian art canon featured a curated collection of masterpieces from the finest modernist artists from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. The sale also provided insight into the rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions of South Asia. Saffronart's stellar reputation ensured the artworks’ authentication as investment pieces. Bulls by Tyeb Mehta (lot #49; sold for $3,600,007). Image courtesy of Saffronart. The lot that achieved the highest sale price was Bulls by Tyeb Mehta (lot #49; sold for USD 3,600,007). It is an acrylic on canvas created between 2005 and 2007. In this extraordinary artwork, Mehta used bold brushstrokes in his iconic style to create powerful imagery. This masterpiece represents Mehta's exploration of themes like suffering and redemption, capturing the viewer's attention with its raw intensity. The bull, delineated as trussed and quartered, made its first appearance as a subject in Mehta’s work in 1956. “I wanted to show the violation of man on man but didn’t want to use a literal image […] I felt that if I showed a bull about to be slaughtered, a trussed bull, it would express the fact of man’s immense potential held captive. A bull running is raw energy, and here it was trussed up for slaughter,” explained the artist. Ram Kumar's Untitled (Two Figures) (lot #30; sold for $600,000). Image courtesy of Saffronart. Another captivating piece was Ram Kumar's Untitled (Two Figures), painted in 1960 (lot #30; sold for $600,000). This oil on canvas is signed and dated in Devanagari and was sold with an inscription and authentication stamp from Kumar Gallery. Kumar, a celebrated artist known for his abstract landscapes, skillfully captures the essence of India. Painted in 1960, this depiction of two figures marks the end of Kumar’s early figurative phase of abstraction. These early works are synonymous with his oeuvre. The two figures seem to be retreating slowly and hesitantly into…

Modern and contemporary art from Korea and abroad will be auctioned in August ahead of large-scale art fairs (Frieze Seoul & Kiaf) in September. Two sales from K Auction and Seoul Auction are expected to be centered on works with marketability that has been verified amid the adjustment of the Korean art market. K Auction will hold an event at its headquarters in Sinsa-dong, Seoul on August 23, 2023, and Seoul Auction will hold a sale at the Gangnam Center on August 29. K Auction will have a total of 61 works, estimated to be worth about USD 5.44 million, and Seoul Auction will bring a total of 97 works together worth about $3.72 million. Kim Whan-ki, Untitled. Image courtesy of K Auction. Two of the various formative experiments that artist Kim Whan-ki attempted when he was active in New York (1963 - 1974) will be presented at the August sale from K Auction. These two works were painted in 1968 with oil on newspapers. Kim, who moved from Korea to New York, began researching and experimenting with form and color. Accordingly, he pursued painting that formed a universal consensus, not a national color. The available lots contain the results of such a formative experiment. The estimates for both works range from about $45,000 to $135,000. Works by Korean experimental artists Kun Yong Lee, Kang-So Lee, and Bae Lee, who have recently attracted attention in Korea and are actively introduced overseas in places such as New York, are also drawing attention. In addition, works by abstract artists such as Hyong-keun Yun and Seo Bo Park, as well as works by artists such as Tschang-yeul Kim, Chong Hak Kim, Dae-won Lee, YeomSoo Hwang, Sook-Ja Lee, Kwan Nam, and Heung-Sou Kim, will find a new owner. Do Ho Suh, one of the next generation of contemporary artists, is also represented in the upcoming sale. The estimated price of his available work is between $21,000 and $37,000. Lee Ufan's From Winds (1982) has the highest presale estimate among K Auction entries this month. The work is estimated to fetch between $600,000 to $900,000. Most…

K Auction to Sell Modern and Contemporary Korean Art This July

As the market heads into the second half of 2023, reports show that the Korean art auction market is shrinking significantly from the same period last year. Some auction houses are looking to change that trend. This July, K Auction will auction 101 works, including Kim Whan-ki's New York-era works, worth about USD 4.92 million (KRW 6.2 billion). The upcoming auction, which will be held at the company’s headquarters in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul on July 26, will showcase various works. WookKyung Choi's Untitled. Image courtesy of K Auction. One eye-catching lot in the sale is Women on the Market Road by artist Park Sookeun from the early 1960s. The estimated price of the work is $320,000 to $555,000 (KRW 400 million to KRW 700 million). At that time, Park Sookeun was suffering from a chronic disease but did not stop drawing. The available work contains compassion for humans and affection for ordinary life. It is characterized by a simple but dense composition. "It is difficult to meet artists who expressed the lives of ordinary Koreans in the 1950s and 60s as honestly as Park Sookeun," K Auction said. "There are also factors that make many people feel desperate after the war." The catalog includes many paintings by major Korean artists in modern and contemporary times. VII-66, painted by Kim Whan-ki in New York, is estimated to sell for about $285,000 to $395,000 (KRW 360 million to KRW 500 million), and Kim Chang-yeol's Water Drop SH86810-86 estimated to fetch between $55,000 to $142,000 (KRW 70 million to KRW 180 million).
