Artwork by FN Souza, Georgia Okeeffe, Alma Thomas and a rare Chippendale Five-Legged Card Table Headline Weschlers September 13 Auction
Weschlers is pleased to announce their September 13th Capital Collections auction with over 250 lots of fine art, antique furniture, silver, porcelain plaques, Meissen figures, Asian works of art and more.
Three works by the celebrated 20th Century Indian artist F.N. Souza (1924-2002) are the top fine art lots in the sale. Your Face, My Thane(Lot 197, estimate: $150,000-250,000), Vatican Cityscape (Lot 198, estimate: $200,000-400,000) and Tres Cabecas em Lisboa (Lot 199, estimate: $150,000-250,000) exhibit the artists typical colorful style and raw energy. As one of Indias most important and influential painters, the artists works continue to garner top prices at auction and the attention of dealers, collectors and art enthusiasts around the globe. These works are offered by the FN Souza International Fine Arts Foundation & Family Trust, Inc.
Georgia OKeeffes (American 1887-1986) Untitled (Banana Flower) (Lot 225, estimate: $100,000-150,000) demonstrates the artists dedication to line and composition with this elegant charcoal on paper, circa 1934. In the artists own words, I will make even busy New Yorkers take time to see what I see of flowers.
Blue Opus II (Lot 235, estimate: $40,000-60,000), an exemplary, vibrant acrylic on canvas by DC artist Alma Woodsey Thomas (American 1891-1978) and the colorful watercolor and ink on paper Untitled (Lot 234, estimate: $20,000-30,000) are sure to pique the interest of collectors and dealers alike.
The highlight of the furniture section is a Chippendale carved and figured mahogany serpentine fold top five-legged card table (Lot 165, $30,000-50,000), attributed to the apprentice workshop of Marinus Willett and Jonathan Pearsee, circa 1770. This exquisite table, from the property of a descendant of Chief Justice John Marshall (1755-1835), is a fine and rare example of a five-legged card table from the 18th Century.
These highlights, and many others, including the entire catalogue of lots will be available for viewing at Weschlers gallery in Rockville, Maryland from September 7-12. The catalogue for the Capital Collections Auction is available for purchase at the gallery and may be viewed online at www.weschlers.com.
The public is welcome to view all lots during exhibit hours prior to the sale: Saturday, Sept. 7 from 10am to Noon; Sunday, Sept. 8 from 11am to 2pm; Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 9-11 from 10am to 4pm; and Thursday, Sept. 12 from 10am to 2pm.
