Original binding, but the spine has been repaired/reinforced with brown cloth tape/strips. Pastedown and eight more pages of ads at front, and more throughout, some in colored ink, and two smaller format inserted ads (Heald’s Business College, and John G. Hodget Co. Stationers). Condition Fair-Good; considerable staining/toning to cover papers; scuffing/edge wear; more recent owner’s inscription front free endpaper; dark dampstaining at bottom edges extends through the front pastedown and ads, to a lesser degree throughout, and heavier staining again towards the back; p. 59 with torn off corner.

Later 19th century binding, decoratively gilt-stamped and blocked brown leather, gilt to spine, raised bands; marbled endpapers. Text pp. 3-32; lithographic title and half title; 35 scenes (30 leaves/plates), some color and tinted; captions in English, Spanish, and French. Inscribed on half title: “To Javier T. Martinez with regards of… [unclear: Mary &…? Griscco…?], September 14, 1901”. Presumably, artist Xavier Timoteo Martinez (1869-1943), whose first name was variously spelled with a “J”. On the back flyleaf, there is a bookseller label for D. P. Elder and Morgan Shepard, San Francisco. Condition: Binding sound, leather with some scuffing and wear, bumped corners; toning (darkest at margins); foxing throughout, including on plates, some of which are considerably spotted/discolored; one plate with a 1 1/2-in tear at top margin, with Scotch tape repair; large crease to front flyleaf and creasing on half title page near gutter.

Provenance: Property from the Saul Brandman Foundation. Beverly Hill, California. Tankard set inclusive of a tankard and five mugs in red tone Sumida pottery fabrication, circaMeiji period. Country of origin: Japan. Each piece has a drip glaze design on the surround in ebony with white and cobalt blue. Each mug has an applied pottery design of a male figure seated beneath a palm tree, and the tankard has anapplied pottery design of two male figures beneath two palm trees. There is an applied porcelain plaque on the back of each piece that is signed in Japanese characters by Inoue Rayosai. The tankard measures 12.5 inches tall by 7 inches wideby 4 inches deep, and each mug measures 4.5 inches tall by 4.5 inches wide by 3 inches deep. Provenance: Property from the Saul Brandman Foundation.
