Statues and Paintings of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Deities Come to Auction

Known as the goddess of compassion and mercy, Guanyin is one of the principal deities in Chinese Buddhism. She is often depicted holding the pearls of illumination, a willow branch, or a vase of pure water in her hand. Folklore states that Guanyin was a Buddhist who led a virtuous life and earned the right to enter Nirvana after death. However, as she stood before the gates of Paradise, Guanyin heard a cry of anguish from below. Moved by the pain of the people, she renounced her reward and vowed to help humans. The upcoming Ocean Star Auctions event presents several sculptures and paintings of Guanyin and other bodhisattvas. The auction also highlights several figure paintings by Chinese artist Zhang Daqian. Born into an artistic family, Zhang is known for his splashed-ink landscapes and lotus paintings. Zhang’s works were influenced by ancient Chinese masters such as Shitao, Tang Yin, and Bada Shanren. Each one of the available pieces bears a Zhang Daqian mark. The auction also offers carved jade statues, Buddhist scriptures, Chinese ceramics, and jewelry. Interested bidders can explore the full listings and register to bid online on Bidsquare.

Ocean Star Auctions Offers Chinese Fine Art This December

In Mahayana Buddhism, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva or Universal Virtue is considered to be the Sūtra (string or thread) of meditation and the practice of repentance. Possessing divine powers, the body of the Universal Virtue is described as having infinite size. The second part of the upcoming Christmas Exclusive Chinese Fine Art Selection sale, presented by Ocean Star Auctions, will feature a gem-inlaid statue of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. Made of gilt bronze, it measures 57 centimeters in height. A three-legged incense burner, designed with gem-inlaid bronze, is also notable. Another available incense burner is made of Hetian jade with ring ears. The use of incense has been integral to traditional Chinese culture since the Neolithic age.  The sale also features a pair of square pots with covers and double ears. The pots are designed with gold and silver inlaying bronze. Made with kallaite and turquoise, a pair of beast ornaments is another striking lot in the catalog. Ocean Star Auctions to Offer Range of Asian Art

In Buddhism, the goddess Tara is considered an embodiment of wisdom. According to mythology, the deity guides human beings along the path to enlightenment. A Chinese gilt bronze sculpture of Tara is highlighted in the upcoming Fine Asian Art Collection, presented by Ocean Star Auctions. Along with sculpture, the sale showcases a range of Chinese Hetian jade ornaments. In Chinese culture, it is believed that the owner of the Hetian jade will be blessed with fortune, love, and health. Another lot of interest is a landscape painting by Chinese painter, scholar, and calligrapher Wen Zhengming. He frequently experimented with the concept of realism. Later in his career, Wen drifted away from the detailed representation of landscape scenes to focus on more freely washed depictions. He was known as one of four prominent painters during the Ming dynasty along with Shen Zhou, Tang Yin, and Qiu Ying. View these items and register to bid on Bidsquare.
