Abstract Gouache by Alexander Calder and Bronze Relief Plaque by Boris Schatz Highlight Fairfield Auction’s December Sale

Alexander Calder was an American sculptor celebrated for his groundbreaking kinetic mobiles and massive static public sculptures. He is also remembered for his Modernist abstract paintings. Calder often transcribed the bright visual aesthetics of his sculptures into two-dimensional mediums. An abstract gouache work by Alexander Calder, titled Butterfly, Mouse, and Snail, is a key highlight of Fairfield Auction’s upcoming December sale. It portrays the artist’s trademark style of using primary colors to depict natural themes, which greatly inspired him.  Stuart Davis’ watercolor New York City Café (1912) is another notable work on offer. The painting reflects the Ashcan School’s influence on the artist. Davis started his art training at the school in 1909 under the guidance of Robert Henri. New York City Café best exemplifies the Ashcan art movement, known for artworks depicting scenes from everyday life in New York. Boris Schatz’s available bronze plaque, The Rabbi’s Blessing, is a relief work featuring significant Jewish imagery. Schatz was a Lithuanian Jewish sculptor and artist based in Israel.
