Phillips’ December Design Auction Realizes $3.5 Million, Led by Jean Royère’s “Ours Polaire” Sofa
Sale Total: $3,461,438/ £2,637,962/ €3,103,871

Cordelia Lembo, Phillips’ Head of Design, New York, said, “Strong international demand for exceptional examples of French Post-War Design prevailed at the December Design sale, Phillips’ final auction of the year. There was a great deal of enthusiasm for works by Jean Royère, with five of his works figuring in the top ten lots, led by the red “Ours Polaire” sofa at $487,500, as well as for Jean-Michel Frank, whose pair of floor lamps soared to nearly five times their low estimate. Italian post-war lighting also performed exceptionally well, as collectors vied for important works by Carlo Scarpa and Gino Sarfatti and with a new record set for Elio Monesi. We were also delighted to set new records for works by Claggett Wilson and Max Lamb. This season, we had the privilege of working with several exceptional private collections, including those of Ann and Robert Fromer, as well as Florence Knoll Bassett, whose nineteenth century weathervanes brought a new group of collectors to our saleroom.”
