Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates To Host Large Variety Auction

The Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates Summer Americana & Variety Auction contains a true diversity of material and will include everything from rare Civil War material and railroad lanterns to country furniture and children’s articles. The large auction will take place over two days, Friday, August 23, 2019 and Saturday, August 24, 2019 with absentee, phone, internet, and in-house bidding available. 

Friday’s session, beginning at 1:00 pm, should start the weekend off with a bang and features part one of the lighting collection of Fil (John) and Robbie Graff, St. Thomas, PA; the lantern collection of the late William C. Brinker, New Brunswick, NJ; textiles deaccessioned by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, Mount Vernon, VA; costumes deaccessioned by The Strong National Museum of Play, Rochester, NY; plus others. The day’s wide selection of lighting features over 50 Aladdin lamps, including a rare floor model with paper shade, ten hanging models with shades, Alacite Dancing Ladies urn lamp, rare glass examples, etc.; student and solar lamps; miniature lamps; finger and stand lamps; whale oil and tin lighting; angle and other hanging lamps; over 30 early railroad and fixed globe lanterns including a number of engraved presentation examples; 40+ marked railroad lanterns; railroad switch lanterns; other lanterns; and railroad locks. Other offerings in the Friday session comprise a collection of American coins and currency, including 1929 $20 Mt. Jackson, VA National Bank note (only 272 sheets printed), gold pieces, silver dollars, &c.; large selection of antique and vintage costumes; 18th – 20th century textiles including copper-plate printed fabric, white-work bedcovers, quilts, table covers, carpets, &c.; pocket watches; lot of sterling silver; gold and costume jewelry; beaded purses; ceramics including Staffordshire transferware and flow blue; carnival and other glass; plus more. 

Saturday’s session, beginning at 9:30 am, should prove to be equally exciting and features the Civil War collection of the late John Rodgers, Annandale, VA; material from the Fritz and Loretta Orebaugh estate, New Market, VA; a Page Co., VA estate collection; historic property descended in the Clopper-Hutton family of Montgomery Co., MD; property from the estate collection of Dan and Doris Chrisman, Roanoke, VA; selections from the private collection of Phylis Salak, Fairfax, VA; the estate of Jean and Ivar Johnson, Vienna, VA; material deaccessioned by The Strong National Museum of Play, Rochester, NY; property deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum, Richmond, VA to benefit collections care, preservation and future acquisitions; plus others. The large session on Saturday will feature a wide selection of country furniture and accessories, including Shenandoah Valley pieces; as-found furniture from the Woodlands, including Baltimore fancy chairs; a Civil War collection, including Colt revolvers, an ambrotype of two Confederate soldiers, Union CDV album, other images, belt buckles and plates, lot of buttons, CSA and state currency and bonds, letters and other manuscript material, a large library of antiquarian and modern books, an atlas to accompany the Official Records, UCV reunion badges/ribbons, many prints, &c. Additionally, the Saturday session will feature the George M. Neese archives, including his manuscript for the volume “Three Years in the Confederate Horse Artillery"; other militaria and weapons; Native American antiquarian books, points, &c.; country store and advertising including signs, cane and other showcases, coffee mills, store bins, &c.; collection of 30 cylinder and disc table-top and console phonographs, many with horns; stoneware and redware including SW VA; lot of baskets; antique and vintage toys and banks; Stieff and other animals; antique dolls; 1920s doll house and accessories; early doll carriages; samplers and early sewing accoutrements; clocks including Ithaca Fashion; collection of circus and related photographs; lot of local ephemera and manuscript material; 18th/19th c. fireplace equipment; many early box locks and keys plus more.
