Xavier Gonzalez was an important muralist and art educator whose long career was celebrated by critics and collectors in America and Europe. Beginning his studies at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1921 to 1923, Gonzalez learned classical art techniques alongside his uncle, the noted artist Jose Arpa. Further studies and travel throughout Europe and Asia followed. When Gonzalez returned to America, he executed several impressive murals for the Works Progress Administration at institutional buildings in Alabama, Texas, and Louisiana, many of which survive to the present. He then became the director of the art school at Sul Ross State Teachers College in Alpine, Texas, where he refined his distinctively Modernist style in landscapes and still-lifes.
